October 2017

President’s Message

Harvey has wreaked havoc on the city of Houston and surrounding counties. I am humbled and proud that our Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Beta Beta Houston Chapter nurses were at the forefront if this disaster. Many of you worked and slept in your healthcare organizations for days to care for your patients. The shelters were filled with STTI nurses who volunteered their time to assist with urgent care needs. And for those of you who lost your home and all our belongings, I know your fortitude – the ability to encounter danger with courage – was a saving grace that gave your family and neighbors the hope that was so needed during that time. Thank you to all of you for the mission/service work you did and continue to do during these difficult times.

Looking forward, we are returning to our nursing roots. Dr. Tony Paterniti, RN is our speaker for our annual fall forum on October 20th: Far More Than The Lady With the Lamp: Myths and Reality Dispelled (see our flyer).  Dr. Paterniti’s connection to Florence Nightingale is an aspirational one; Nightingale represents the nursing profession and her history is the history of nursing. Over time, Paterniti has devoted years of research to bring together a unique collection of memorabilia, books, artifacts, and letters that give a fuller picture to the guiding light of the nursing profession.

We are collecting pop-top tabs as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House.  A collection box will be available at the registration desk at the fall forum.  If everyone just brings a few, they will add up fast 🙂

Consider entering our 10th Annual Essay Contest.  Applicants submit an essay of 500 words or less from their perspective on the topic of: “How has Florence Nightingale influenced your decision to become a nurse or influenced you in your nursing career?”

  • First place ($100)
  • Second place ($50)

Winners will be announced at the Fall Forum. Only electronic submissions by October 13, 2017, to dmontgomery@twu.edu

Our STTI Beta Beta Chapter meetings will be open to all members during my tenure as President. My hope is, with your help, that our chapter can become the chapter that meets the needs of all members, is of service to our community, and that is becoming a chapter that we never dreamed it could be. Our next meeting is October 11th at 5 pm at the Antica Osteria Italian Restaurant at 2311 Bissonnet St. Houston, 77005. Valet parking is available.

Please join us!

Sincerely,  Wyona M. Freysteinson, PhD, MN; President STTI Beta Beta Houston Chapter

Wreaths Across America – Houston

Since 2011 our STTI Beta Beta Houston chapter has partnered with Wreaths Across America Houston (WAAHouston) whose mission is to honor our military as they “remember, honor, teach.” It is a privilege to partner with WAAHouston in this service project and place a wreath on each veteran’s site at the Houston National Cemetery. Come join us to honor our military and to remember our loved ones.

Please join us in raising funds for Wreaths Across America-Houston – and for our very own Beta Beta Houston Chapter. Raising money to place a live Maine wreath upon all of the almost 70,000 fallen hero’s gravesites at the Houston National Cemetery is a truly humbling experience. Part of the money donated to this cause is given to the STTI Beat Beta Chapter.  Here is a link to that webpage.
