December 2017

From Your New STTI BB Webmaster!

mg_9950.jpg
Hello! My name is Shanae Williams, BS, RN.  I am a recent TWU graduate. I was inducted into this lovely organization in April 2017.
Determined not to just join, I decided that I wanted to be an active part of the organization. So when Dr. Mary Anne Vincent sent the email regarding becoming the webmaster I swiftly responded due to my love for nursing and computers.  Dr. Vincent will be retiring from her webmaster position and I will be taking over as the new webmaster for Beta Beta Houston Chapter starting December 2017.
There will be no big changes to the process as it stands today. I will continue to use the sttibbwebmaster@gmail.com email address and I will maintain the website and the newsletter.
I am very honored to be your new webmaster! I aspire to be as wonderful and skillful a webmaster as my predecessor and mentor. So during this transition and afterward, I would like everyone who has updates and information to continue to send it all to this email address and to give me at least five (5) business days to update the website and/or newsletter. There will be times when I can do it faster, however, expect to see the changes within at least five (5) business days.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, then feel free to email them to me at sttibbwebmaster@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Shanae Williams, BS, RN
Beta Beta Houston Webmaster

Important Note About the Website

If you have been sending us material to post on the website but have been frustrated because you are still not seeing it on there, please know that Dr. Vincent and I share your frustration — as we have been unable to edit it for a few weeks now. We have been in contact with STTI national about this. The central person who handles this is currently on maternity leave and her stand-in has been talking to the technology department about this problem. Thank you for your patience!

Honoring Our Soldiers

Imagine 400 motorcycles followed by ten 18 wheelers entering into the Houston National Cemetery while hundreds of people stand waiting to put 75,000 wreaths on our soldiers’ graves. Last year Beta Beta Houston provided 737 of those wreaths. Our goal is to increase that number to 1000 wreathes this holiday season.

Since 2011 our STTI Beta Beta Houston chapter has partnered with Wreaths Across America Houston (WAAHouston) whose mission is to honor our military as they “remember, honor, teach.” It is a privilege to partner with WAAHouston in this service project and place a wreath on each veteran’s site at the Houston National Cemetery.

Please join us in raising funds for Wreaths Across America-Houston – and for our very own Beta Beta Houston Chapter. President’s Message

Harvey has wreaked havoc on the city of Houston and surrounding counties. I am humbled and proud that our Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Beta Beta Houston Chapter nurses were at the forefront if this disaster. Many of you worked and slept in your healthcare organizations for days to care for your patients. The shelters were filled with STTI nurses who volunteered their time to assist with urgent care needs. And for those of you who lost your home and all our belongings, I know your fortitude – the ability to encounter danger with courage – was a saving grace that gave your family and neighbors the hope that was so needed during that time. Thank you to all of you for the mission/service work you did and continue to do during these difficult times.

Looking forward, we are returning to our nursing roots. Dr. Tony Paterniti, RN is our speaker for our annual fall forum on October 20th: Far More Than The Lady With the Lamp: Myths and Reality Dispelled (see our flyer).  Dr. Paterniti’s connection to Florence Nightingale is an aspirational one; Nightingale represents the nursing profession and her history is the history of nursing. Over time, Paterniti has devoted years of research to bring together a unique collection of memorabilia, books, artifacts, and letters that give a fuller picture to the guiding light of the nursing profession.

We are collecting pop-top tabs as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House.  A collection box will be available at the registration desk at the fall forum.  If everyone just brings a few, they will add up fast 🙂

Consider entering our 10th Annual Essay Contest.  Applicants submit an essay of 500 words or less from their perspective on the topic of: “How has Florence Nightingale influenced your decision to become a nurse or influenced you in your nursing career?”

  • First place ($100)
  • Second place ($50)

Winners will be announced at the Fall Forum. Only electronic submissions by October 13, 2017, to dmontgomery@twu.edu

Our STTI Beta Beta Chapter meetings will be open to all members during my tenure as President. My hope is, with your help, that our chapter can become the chapter that meets the needs of all members, is of service to our community, and that is becoming a chapter that we never dreamed it could be. Our next meeting is October 11th at 5 pm at the Antica Osteria Italian Restaurant at 2311 Bissonnet St. Houston, 77005. Valet parking is available.

Please join us!

Sincerely,  Wyona M. Freysteinson, PhD, MN; President STTI Beta Beta Houston Chapter
